Emergent Literacy
The goal of this lesson is to help children identify /d/, the phoneme represented by the letter D. Students will be instructed on how to recognize /d/ in spoken words by learning a meaningful representation of the sound (hitting a drum) and the letter symbol D, practice finding /d/ in words, and apply phoneme awareness with /d/ in phonetic cue reading by distinguishing rhyming words from beginning letters.
Beginning Reading
This lesson teaches children about the long vowel correspondences ee = /E/ and ea = /E. In order to be able to read, children must learn to recognize the spellings that map word pronunciations. In this lesson, children will learn to spell, recognize and read words containing the spellings ee and ea. They will learn a meaningful representation (John Hears a Bee in his Ear), they will spell and read words containing this spelling in a Letterbox lesson, as well as read a decodable book that focuses on the correspondences ee = /E/ and ea = /E/.
Growing Independence and Fluency
Fluent reading is essential in comprehending. In order for students to read effortlessly and with automaticity, they must practice expression, pace, and comprehension. Effortless word recognition allows students to reflect on what they are reading. Through reading, decoding, crosschecking, mental marking, and rereading, students will be able to confidently improve their reading rate and grow into fluent readers. Students will use the strategy of crosschecking after readings of a decodable text and repeated readings to gain fluency and independence in reading.
Reading to Learn
In order to read with the most success, we need to be able to comprehend, or understand, what we are reading. One of the most useful reading strategies we can use to gain comprehension is called summarization. Summarization involves reading a passage and taking out any uncesssary information so we are left with only the important facts. In this particular lesson, students will practice summarizing a passage about cheetahs, the fastest animal on land.
